Auli Travel Guide

Nestled in the lap of the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, Auli is encompassed by oak and coniferous forests. Owing to its perfect slopes, Auli is among the best skiing destinations in India. The slopes of Auli are reputed internationally for their thrilling skiing, adventure sports, and spectacular views of the snow-capped Himalayas.

Snuggled in the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, Auli is also known as Auli Bugyal. The ‘Bugyal’ means meadow in the regional language. The meadow is located at heights ranging from 2,519 m to 3,050 m above sea level. The lofty peaks of Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat, and Kamat can be easily seen from here.

The history of Auli is also spiritual, as its roots date back to the 8th century. It is believed that this beautiful place is blessed by the holy Adi Shankaracharya, who is said to have meditated here. Now Auli is visited by thrill-seekers and people who want to enjoy the bliss of the mountains.

The slopes of Auli are known for providing a thrilling ski experience for professional skiers as well as learners. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) is responsible for the maintenance of the region. There are separate slopes for beginners and the more experienced skiers. GMVN conducts various skiing courses for a duration of 7-14 days.

Snow gear, guides and other tourist services are also provided. The slopes are covered with Deodar and Oak forests appearing lush green in summers and carpet in a fine layer of snow in winters. Especially from January to March, it is a snow wonderland.

Auli is also the home of Asia’s longest and one of the world’s highest cable cars, covering a distance of 4km. The Chair Lift and Ski-Lift of cable cars have a remote-controlled hydraulic and pneumatic braking system and a storm warning device. The ropeway connects Auli with Joshimath in 25 minutes. Skiers with their ski gear can reach the highest top of the mountain and make their way down. Other visitors can enjoy the enchanting views of the Himalayas distinctly visible from the Gondola.
